Between the Ending and Beginning is Magic

2021.09.09 Reflection

Does your life feel magical?

Monday was Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Instead of the celebrations and resolutions that accompany the calendar New Year, in the Jewish tradition, this is the time of year for reflection, renewal, atonement, and forgiveness.

This is such a sacred practice in Judaism, that the entire month before Rosh Hashanah (the month of Elul) is a time of introspection and personal stock-taking.

Or to put it another way, it is a time to remember to live in alignment with who you are and who you’ve come here to be! I love that it usually occurs close to my birthday (September 18). So, during my birthday month, as I get to be a year older, I’m also a year wiser and more in tune with my inner being.

Do you have a particular time of year that you set aside for reflection, renewal, and forgiveness? What do you do to open yourself to new beginnings and expand your sense of what’s possible?

We all want new beginnings. That chance to create something new and wonderful.

But we are reluctant to let go of what we currently have, even if it’s not to our liking. Even if it’s painful. Even if it seems to be robbing us of joy. Even if it stifles our freedom.

We want a better relationship, but we refuse to dissolve the current one. We tell ourselves that once we find someone new, then we’ll let go of the current one. We want to grow our business, but we refuse to spend money on marketing or employees or sales training until our business grows first. We want to make money doing something we love, but we find a million excuses as to why it can’t be done so we continue as we are.

“There’s a power that lives in the space ‘between,’ that subtle instant when something ends and what follows next hasn’t yet begun. From the birth and death of galaxies, to the beginning and ending of careers and relationships, and even in the simplicity of breathing in and out, creation is the story of beginnings and endings: cycles that start and stop, expand and contract, live and die. Regardless of the scale, between the ‘end’ and the ‘beginning,’ there exists a moment in time when neither one has fully happened. That moment is where magic and miracles come from! In the instant of between, all possibilities exist and none have been chosen.”   ~ Gregg Braden, Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer

There may be power in the space between an ending and a beginning and that space may also be where magic and miracles happen, but we don’t want to be uncomfortable. We want guarantees! (at least many of us do).

Stepping into the unknown and facing our fears won’t kill us.

When we first learned to ride a bicycle or drive a car, we were probably nervous and afraid. But we pushed through that fear and now these activities are second nature to us. When we first started our job, we didn’t know what to expect or if we even had the right skills and we may have been nervous and afraid. But we showed up day after day and gained skills, confidence, and expertise.

So, why do we continue to claim that we are too afraid to end something that we know needs to ‘die’ in our life instead of starting something new?

What limiting beliefs need to ‘die’ in order for you to thrive? What judgment needs to ‘die’ so you don’t get triggered?

….Or if you prefer things in a more positive light….

What new beliefs need to be embraced in order for you to thrive? Who and what can you forgive so you don’t get triggered?

Our mind plays tricks on us. We live in the world of ‘what if’: What if I make a mistake. What if I make a wrong decision? What if I’m not successful? What if people get mad at me? What if I’m rejected? What if my family doesn’t like it? And the ‘what if?’ list goes on and on.

Here’s a different set of what if questions: what if our reflection, renewal, atonement, and forgiveness open the window to new possibilities? What if opening ourselves to uncertainty and stepping into the unknown helps us feel an aliveness and a connection to the Divine that we’ve never experienced before? What if making new choices (even though it’s scary) helps you define your purpose and frees you to live your authentic life?

What if your life can change by asking a different set of ‘what if’ questions? Now that’s something to reflect on!

Say YES to yourself by taking some time for reflection and renewal!

Rock On
